Interview with Alphabetik (Planet X Records)

By Fed Up - February 08, 2021

1. (Pat) Hello please introduce yourself to the readers?

Alphabetik.

2. (Pat) When did you first become interested in hip-hop and was it long before you discovered the underground scene?

I remember at a young age my Nana would always have 94.5 out of Boston MA playing in the car. It was the only local hip hop station at the time, she would play the music loud and jam out to the songs. Around elementary school I remember watching YO MTV Raps, I still have the cards from back in the day too. My self and my boy Bobby would make up rhymes and spit freestyles.

3. (Pat) When did you become involved with PXR?

In the early 2000's Myself and El*A*Kewents had met at Nights of Columbus, it was a going away party for a mutual friend. While i was living in Manchester NH we also connected on some side projects as well. Shortly after that I was invited to perform with him and VX as a part of "Last Days Project". We also collaborated on a show in Leominster MA a few years later, and continued to stay in touch.  Officially I made my PXR debut on "The Celestial Order" album.

4. (Pat) Who were the first hip-hop artists that you heard? Who are some of your favorite hip-hop artists from the scene today?

Some of the first hip hop artists I heard were Tone Loc, Krs One, Gang Starr, Das Efx, Run DMC, Beastie Boys. Today I listen to a lot of WU affiliates  Sunz of Man, Killa Army, Gravediggaz, Canibus, Ra the Rugged Man, AFRO, Immortal Technique, and PXR  member albums.

5. (Pat) When did you first get the idea to start singing and rapping? Do you do anything special to keep your voice and throat healthy?

Initially I started home recording after I sold my Crate Blue Voodoo guitar amp for turntables and a mic. (1998). Nothing specifically to keep my throat healthy, however I try to eat as much organic products as possible as well as juice every morning.

6. (Pat) How long does it usually take to complete one song?

If all goes according to plan a month.

7. (Pat) Where do you draw inspiration for the lyrics and what are some topics and subjects you sing about?

Mystical and spiritual mysteries, ancient history. Myths, stories, and cultural legends. Magic, alchemy, math and sciences.

8. (Pat) Please tell the readers a little about your releases and where can the readers purchase them? Besides releases do you all have any other merchandise currently available?

"Hidden by The Leaves" is an international collaboration with myself and Irrefutable from PXR. The EP was laced with low-fi  beats by Green Dutch and Samurai code inspired rhymes. There are physical CD's available as well as tapes. "Polar Opposites" is a PXR squad album, highlighting cosmic shifts, and dropping knowledge on condition of humanity.( This was the first time I worked with MC Therapist.  "Alphahermetiks" is my first solo album.  This album took the listener on a mystical journey of life, death, and beyond. Im very proud of this album for its rhythmic value however maybe more importantly its conceptual structure. There are physical CD's available. In addition you can listen on Spotify, Itunes, YOUTUBE, Bandcamp, Vimeo etc.

9. (Gaz) For our readers who may not have discovered underground hip hop. How would you say it differs from the mainstream?

I feel the underground is more raw, authentic and in your face, while mainstream is "candy coated" with illusion, greed and hype.

10. (Gaz) What do you enjoy most about the underground and how could it improve?

I enjoy the way underground hip-hop music has literally broken language barriers and allowed me to connect with people from all around the world. It could improve by reducing / removing hatred and ignorance.

11. (Gaz) Do you have any new albums, Eps, or singles due for release soon, if so what are they about and what style of beats/music?

Myself and El just launched a new track free for download called "Piracy" on Bandcamp and were working on an album called "Starseed Prophecy".  There are producers and MC's from France, Africa, and the US on the album with various beats.

12. (Pat) Besides Underground hip-hop do you currently listen to any other genres or underground or mainstream music? If yes, what are some genres you listen to and who are your favorite bands and artists?

I love Reggae artists from Peter Tosh, Burning Spear, Jimmy Cliff, Bob, Ziggy, Damion, Marley and more.

13. (Pat) I know with the covid crisis going on this year it has probably been hard to set up shows and get motivated to do them. But what were some of your favorite shows that you played or watched?

My favorite show would have to be at OPA in Boston with VX and EL (aka release party for "A Human Becoming").

14. (Pat) Are there any shows planned for early 2021? Where can people find the YouTube channel?

No shows yet. PXR YOU TUBE Channel.

15. (Gaz) I know you enjoy rock climbing. When did you become interested in rock climbing?

Some time in middle school, I even built a wall in my back yard in NH.

16. (Gaz) What are some of your favorite places you have climbed and where you would like to climb next after Covid?

I enjoy going to Rock Spot in Providence RI (it's a great boulder gym) as well as Brooklyn Boulders in Boston. I'd like to get to New Hampshire and do some outdoor routes this summer. Hopefully I can do something at Yosemite before I die.

17. (Pat) Besides music we are huge movie fans here do you enjoy watching movies? If yes do you have a favorite genre?

I like watching moves, different ones for different moods / situations I guess Horror, Action, Crime, War, Adventure.
